What is the Met Gala? 

The Met Gala, created in 1948, was initially a fundraising initiative intended to finance the Costume Institute, the fashion department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Unlike the museum's other departments, the Costume Institute had to cover its own financial needs, as explained by Vanity Fair, a fashion magazine. At the time, fashion was considered a secondary art form and did not benefit from funding. 

For a long time, the Met Gala was exclusively reserved for the elite of New York high society. However, in 1995, Anna Wintour, a fashion icon and editor-in-chief of the American edition of Vogue magazine, decided to reinvent it and turn it into a celebrity event in tune with the social media era, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The Met Gala 2023 exhibition shines a light on the remarkable career of Karl Lagerfeld, the late artistic director of Chanel from 1983 until his passing in 2019.
